The woman’s face scrunched up. She scratched at the back of her neck as she thought. If she didn’t start thinking faster, I’d strangle her where she stood.

“Ya probably could use a cubwart poultice for the bleeding. As for the pain, ya can’t go wrong with a mushroom mix. Should be plenty of both back there. Just look for a purple bottle and a round box with cubwart written on it.”

I was nearly halfway down the aisle by the time she finished talking. I bumbled out a thank you over my shoulder and hurried to the eclectic display she’d pointed to. There was no obvious rhyme or reason to the mess on the shelves. The clutter overwhelmed me. I focused in, trying to disregard everything that wasn’t purple. When I saw a tall purplish-blue glass bottle, I sighed in relief. The cubwart box sat directly next to it. Suddenly I believed in miracles.

Without a second glance, I chucked a small sack of silver coins onto the sales counter and sprinted out the creaky door.

  Chapter 4

It was well past sundown by the time I’d applied enough of the cubwart poultice to be certain Garett wouldn’t bleed out during the night.

“You didn’t need to use the entire box,” Garett muttered, face buried in a pillow as he laid on the bed.

“It’s better to be covered in cubwart gunk than dead,” I said, smoothing a fresh strip of cloth down over the wound.

“I’ve survived worse than an untreated bite to the shoulder.”

  I rolled my eyes. “Sure.”

My stomach growled, tormenting me with the reminder I hadn’t eaten today. I winced at the discomfort, but continued with my task.

With the last bandage wrapped firmly in place, I started picking up the massive amounts of debris that had accumulated on the bed - Bloody rags scattered about. A scissors hiding precariously under the sheet. The cubwart box that I’d squished under my weight when I’d accidentally sat on it.

Garett laid still on the bed, still on his stomach. He’d joked throughout the treatment, but the stiffness of his muscles never went away. Wearily, I eyed the empty purple bottle on the nightstand.

  “How’s the pain?” I asked.

  “Bearable.”

“Is it any better than before?”

“I’ll be honest, you paid good silver for a shit mushroom mix.”

I frowned despite not being surprised. At least the cubwart had worked, and that was the more important of the two remedies.

  “Can I get you anything?”

“Some ale and a good lay.”

I paused, arms full of rags. Blinking, I regarded the alpha lying in the bed. His back rose and fell with deep, rhythmic breaths. My eyes followed the contours of his muscular back noticing, not for the first time that night, the pale scars scattered across his tanned skin. I licked my lips, trying - and failing - not to feel tempted by his words.

“You’ve bled out along half the countryside today. I’d pay good coin to watch you so much as try and muster up the energy to take a woman to bed.”

Garett propped himself up on his elbows to look at me, his eyes dark and roguish. He smirked.

  “You doubt me, omega?”

An involuntary shiver ran through me. Hearing the word omega on his lips stoked the arousal in my belly. I wasn’t used to that - to liking the designation. I needed to change the subject.

“How do you expect me to believe that you can please an omega when you can’t even keep one fed? Really Garett, I’m starving.” I said, turning to throw the rags into a basket in the closet.

Suddenly there was a warm pressure on my hip. Garett spun me around, pinning me to the closet door. Shocked, my hands pressed to his chest to push him away, but my omega stopped me.

“What are you doing?” I sputtered.

My senses filled with the alpha. I stared at his chest, not trusting myself to look up and meet his eyes. Rationally, I knew this didn’t make sense. But instinctually, I couldn’t figure out why my mind insisted on being rational.

Garett’s hands slipped around my waist. His powerful arms pulled me firmly against him. Every part of him that touched me was hard and unyielding.

“I never back down from a challenge.” His breath tickled my ear as he spoke. I shivered at the dull ache it caused within me.

I tried to argue, to open my mouth and be the voice of reason, but nothing came out. His strong alpha scent was painted with a strain of arousal. His alpha wanted me. My heart stuttered in my chest.

His hand trailed up my arm, coming to rest on my neck. I leaned into the touch, baring myself to him for the second time that day. As he scented me, his musk got stronger. He pressed his lips to neck, drawing a whimper from my lips. I couldn’t breathe. I could hardly think.

Garett nibbled and sucked gently at my gland. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer. His mouth on my skin was overwhelming. I wanted to be closer to him. I needed him to touch me.

  “Garett,” I moaned.

His free hand dropped from my waist down to my ass. He kneaded the flesh, pushing my core flush against his leg. Sparks of pleasured relief uncoiled in my belly at the contact, only to be replaced with a stronger and more demanding need. Thigh between my legs, he pulled my hips forward, grinding my cunt against him. I gasped. My head lolled back, bumping the wood of the door.

The unexpected ache at the back of my skull pulled me back to reality. Sort of. Enough to know that I needed to think, even though my body protested the idea with iron force.

“Garett wait,” I said, my voice unusually high pitched to my own ears.

He pulled back from my scent gland and met my eyes. His gaze was focused - heated. I swallowed thickly.

“I-I need to eat,” I said. It was technically true, but I didn’t feel hungry in that moment. Not for food. But I needed him to let go of me, and to give my brain a break from his scent. I desperately needed a chance to think properly.

He nodded once, his eyes not leaving mine. “Tonight, I’ll take care of you. I’ll be back soon.”

A chill ghosted over my skin when he pulled away. I watched him slip out the front door of the cabin, off into the unlit wilderness. For several moments after the door closed behind him, I stood frozen in place.

  What the hell just happened?

Needing something to do with my body, which was shaking lightly with anticipation, I went back to the bed and grabbed more of the mess I’d been tending to. Moving back and forth between the kitchenette and the bed, I tried to focus.

Only a short while before, Garett had laid limply on the bed, barely able to move. I’d thought him only moments away from falling asleep mid-sentence. But then he’d…

  It didn’t add up.

He’d shown no interest in me before. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like the way he touched me, but it was unexpected. And unwarranted. We were only pretending to court; there was no reason for him to keep up the ruse in private.

I grabbed the empty bottle of mushroom mix on the end table. Walking to the sink, my fingers absently peeled at the heavily faded label. With a flick of my wrist, I turned on the faucet. Rushing water hit the metal sink, clanging dully.

That’s when I saw it, written in an unassuming cursive scrawl. The label read:

Fae’s Spring Water. Warning: strong natural aphrodisiac. Use sparingly.

  Shit.
